(cricket) a batsman is dismissed when the ball hits their leg instead of the stumps
Leg Before Wicket (LBW) is a method of dismissal in cricket. It occurs when the batter’s leg blocks the ball from hitting the stumps, preventing it from getting the batter out. For an LBW to be given, the ball must be pitched in line with the stumps or outside the batter's side stump, and it must have been going on to hit the stumps if not intercepted by the batter's leg. The batter is out LBW if their leg, often the front leg, stops the ball from hitting the stumps. This rule is in place to prevent unfairly blocking the ball with the body.
